Local Journalism Awards gala arranged by Maldives Media Council to acknowledge and celebrate achievements of journalists and reporters will be hosted on Wednesday night at Dharubaaruge.
The awarding ceremony first initiated back in 2013 with the aim of promoting press freedom and achievements in the field.
Normally the event takes place on May 3, which marks the International Press Freedom Day. However due to several unforeseen circumstances the gala event was pushed to October.
A total of 45 individuals were nominated from various fields of journalism. Awards are given for the achievements and milestones set during last year's run.
Awarding categories include;
- Social journalism
- Political journalism
- Law and order journalism
- Business and economic journalism
- Sports journalism
- Photo journalism
- Video journalism
- Feature article
- Most promising journalist
Feature article would be the newly added category in this year's awarding show while Wednesday night's gala would announce a special lifetime achievement award in journalism.
