The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to request Maldives Police Service and National Integrity Commission (NIC) to launch an investigation into a fire that ravaged several government buildings last Thursday.
During a press conference held Monday, MDP’s Legal Director, Mahfooz Saeed emphasized the need for an independent investigation into the fire. He stated that the MDP would request the police and NIC to launch a criminal probe into the case, expressing MDP’s desire to also involve the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) in the investigation.
Mahfooz further said it must be verified whether the official documents that got destroyed in the fire are documents that should have been archived under the National Archives Act. Therefore, a request to confirm this will be made to- the Director for the National Archives, he added.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Ali Shujau had revealed that the government would seek international assistance to investigate the fire.
