Jarraafu is a success, assured welfare; says MTCC CEO

The mega hopper suction dredger 'Mahaa Jarraafu' porting at Haa Dhaal atoll Kulhudhuffushi on Wednesday is regarded as a success according to owner company's Chief Executive.

While speaking to Avas, Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Ziyath who is currently at Kulhudhuffushi said the investment on building Mahaa Jarraafu is without a doubt a landmark success in the company's history and it would prove beneficial.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) owns the gigantic 92 meter hopper suction dredger which was built on an loan investment of USD 36 million.

The vast vessel's reached Maldives and ported at Kulhudhuffushi around 15:00hrs on Wednesday for the land reclamation project under the airport development.

Under the project, MTCC stated their dredger will reclaim a total of 15 hector land area within a span of 180 days including shore protection. The company's honcho, Ziyath specified a total of 9 hector area from the Kulhudhuffushi mangrove would be reclaimed and an additional 6 hector area from the sea, at the north end of the island where the mangrove is situated as well.

Although the dredger dropped its anchor for land reclamation project, it would not go operational right away but is expected to kick off dredging earlier next month. Meanwhile shore protection machinery have been brought in while pipes used in the reclamation project has been procured and transported to Kulhudhuffushi.

Post the land reclamation project Mahaa Jarraafu will travel to Shaviyani atoll Funadhoo for a similar land reclamation project. Funadhoo is expected to get a 21 hector land area reclaimed for the planned airport development.

"We are 100% certain the project will be a success and sure of settling the loan investment," Ziyath said adding "payment period spans 10 years, but we are certain that we will be able to settle it easily."

MTCC honcho had expressed his gratitude to president Abdulla Yameen and commended on his visionary leadership attributes.

The first ever hopper suction dredger added to MTCC fleet boasts a 92.95 meter in length and 16.30 meter in width, with a storage capacity of 3,700 cubic meter.
