A Maldives media council (MMC) member has filed a case at the Civil Court against the council after it refused to probe a complaint against opposition aligned Raajje TV for carrying out a silent protest during the council's annual journalism award ceremony in October.
Raajje TV staff had arrived at the function carrying banners against the broadcasting regulator calling for its members to resign after the TV station was repeatedly slapped with hefty fines under the contentious anti-defamation law. The Raajje TV staff had however made no attempt to disrupt the function.
MMC member Assad Shareef had filed a complaint at the council against the Raajje TV which had been rejected. Shareef is now seeking the the country's Civil Court to intervene and force the MMC to investigate his complaint against the opposition aligned TV station.
