Eight individuals have received the prestigious Youth Awards at the hands of president Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
The awards ceremony held on Sunday night to commemorate Youth Day saw eight promising youths from various fields of work and expertise awarded while a special Martyr Jawaad Umar commemorative plaque - which is awarded to acts of bravery and courage - was awarded in the event as well.
The Martyr Jawaad Umar commemorative plaque was awarded to one Ahmed Shafiu who had saved a five year old child and mother from an accident back in 2013.
Youth Award in business and economic field was awarded to Ahmed Gaalib while arts and craft field works recognition went to Hussain Shiham in the form of the award. The award for anti-narcotic work was received by one Ali Naseem while the youth award in sports and recreation went to Ahmed Shiham.
Ahmed Nasheed was recognized and awarded for his voluntary and aid work while Mohamed Zaushan received his award for outstanding conduct as a vocational trainer. Additionally Ahmed Shaifu received the youth award for his work in promoting and developing healthy livelihood and families.
A special song to commemorate Youth Day was launched during the ceremony while locally famous drum group 'Harubee' performed at the event.
