Opposition warns to sabotage China free trade agreement

Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has warned that the opposition will sabotage the government's attempt to sign a free trade agreement between Maldives and China much like the botched Faafu atoll deal.

While speaking at MDP's camp the deputy leader of the party Ibrahim Shifaz said the agreement will pave way for Maldives getting enslaved by China.

"We were able to save the entire Faafu atoll from getting sold off to foreign and likewise we will save Maldives from getting enslaved by the Chinese," Shifaz said on Sunday night.

Shifaz also highlighted the corporate and economical setbacks for Maldives should the FTA get signed with China, stating the agreement cites of a "welcome pass" for Chinese traders to get a strong foothold in local small and medium consumer and merchandise businesses.

The deputy leader of MDP had also affirmed that the opposition will promote awareness over the adverse results Maldives would "suffer" through if the FTA is implemented, reasoning that local businesses will lose control and market in Maldives leading to a heavy economical blow.

Shifaz had also advised China to refrain proceeding with the agreement.
