Maldives pres defends jailing rivals for 'progress'

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Sunday again defended the jailing most of his political rivals insisting that it was necessary to ensure development and progress for future generations.

Speaking after inaugurating a new harbour in Noonu Atoll Maalhendhoo island, president Yameen noted the much needed infrastructure development in the Atolls. He added that it was the responsibility of each and every citizen to take the country to the next generation in the best way possible.

"We can't possibly ignore and allow the people who blatantly disobey the laws and continuously try to plunge this country into chaos," he insisted.

President Yameen aimed a fresh dig at his rivals accusing them of denying the people of much needed development for their own personal political gain.

He also urged the people to think deeply about the political landscape when exercising their right to vote in the presidential elections next year.

"We are definitely a nation with peace loving Muslims. So we must always think that even in a democracy, we must resolve conflicts within certain limits and principles," he advised.

"So why do the people need to think twice before casting their vote. Why do the people need to be thankful for all they have and vote with their minds."
