Gayoom condemns 'plot to kill' Nasheed

Deposed ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) leader on Sunday condemned reports of an alleged threat to former president Mohamed Nasheed's life.

Nasheed was jailed on terror charges after he was convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison over the arbitrary detention of a sitting judge while he was president.

He now lives in self imposed exile in the UK after he was allowed to leave to Britain on medical leave in an internationally brokered deal in January last year.

According to Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) the party was forced to cancel a scheduled meeting with his supporters in neighbouring Sri Lanka where he has made frequent visits since his exile to meet with top party officials over reports of a planned attack.

Former foreign minister during Nasheed's government Ahmed Naseem told opposition aligned Raajje TV that MDP was not prepared to take any chances with the meeting.

The former strongman who had ruled the country for three decades before he was ousted by Nasheed in the first democratic elections in 2008 took Twitter to express deep concern over the reports.

"Deeply concerned by news that HE President Mohamed Nasheed had to cancel his scheduled meeting with Maldivians in Colombo because of credible reports of a threat to his life," Gayoom said.

"Our reform alliance strongly condemns all such attempts."

Gayoom along with Nasheed has formed an unexpected alliance against incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom where the duo is expected to nominate a coalition backed candidate for the presidential elections slated for next year.
