The Maldives man killed by the Syrian army in west Damascus was a prominent field commander for the al Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), according to Syria media reports.
According to Syria government aligned 'Al-Masdar News' the Maldives man identified as Abu Saad Al-Maldifi was killed by the Syrian Arab Army during the last clashes in the Beit Jinn pocket bordering Israel.
The Damascus government has long accused Israel of harboring and supporting terrorists in their war against the Syrian state whether through medical, aerial, or logistic support.
It remains unknown whether the foreign jihadists made it their way to southern Syria through Israel or Jordan, but the Syrian government is determined to expel the radical militancy’s presence from the Golan Heights positioned on Israel’s borders.
Maldives authorities have looked to stem the flow of locals joining the Syrian war, where various sources claims that Maldives has the highest number of fighters in Syria per capita.
