Child molestation cases reach 29 in January

Gender Ministry of Maldives has confirmed that a total of 29 child molestation cases have been registered at the authority during the month of December alone.

During 2017, it was reported that a total of 87 child abuse cases were lodged at the authority of which the dominant issue was sexual abuse of children.

According to December statistics of the Ministry several cases of child abuse had been reported to the authority during the month, which had included cyber-bullying and child exploitation.

While the cases of child molestation reported to Gender Ministry had reached 29, this comprises a horrific 43% of the total child abuse cases reported.

Gender Ministry regularly updates the statistics reflecting from the cases and complaints lodged at the authority. December recorded a total of 203 cases reported which included different aspects of child abuse.

Cases of sexual abuse of children had been scarily at the top while the next most filed cases included negligence of guardianship duties and cases of inflicting mental or psychological pain on children. The former had 13 distinct cases reported while the latter had 10 reported cases filed at Gender Ministry.

In addition to this, 2 cases of cyber-bullying were reported with five cases of children witnessing domestic abuse reached the Ministry.

Furthermore Gender Ministry had handled 10 juvenile cases during the month of December.
