Court rescinds arrest order of Gayoom's MP son

Criminal Court has rescinded the arrest and 15-day remand order on Dhiggaru constituency lawmaker Ahmed Faris Maumoon on Monday night.

The court had rescinded the arrest order of Faris Maumoon over Supreme Court's order on Thursday night to release nine political opponents that had included the lawmaker in the lot. The arrest and remand order of the parliamentarian was revoked on the coinciding vote by judges bench of Criminal Court.

Authorities have been ordered to release Faris Maumoon immediately.

Earlier on Monday Faris Maumoon has submitted a habeas corpus from the top-court for his release.

The court said the questionable and politically motivated nature of the trials of the political leaders warrants a re-trial and ordered the authorities to immediately free the jailed leaders until a court of law sentences otherwise.

Former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's elder son Faris Maumoon is tried for bribing parliamentarians during the no-confidence motion of parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh.

Exactly two days after he was released, a fresh arrest warrant was issued by a newly sworn in Criminal Court judge; Hussain Shaheed. The arrest warrant cited Faris Maumoon is a person of interest who has apt motive to contaminate state evidence which has been presented for foreign forensic analysis.

Faris Maumoon was slammed a 15-day remand on January 27.
