Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the development of Kulhudhuffushi airport runway at a project cost of MVR 50.9 million.
At a special function held on Monday in Regional Airports office at Velana International Airport (VIA) the agreement was signed between Chief Executive of MTCC Ibrahim Ziyath and Director General of Regional Airports Saamee Ageel.
At the ceremony Ageel noted that MTCC was awarded the development of airport runway along with its apron. Kulhudhuffushi airport's runway will stretch to 1.2 kilometers.
Developing party, MTCC has been assigned a total of 160 days to complete the project, according to Chief Executive Ziyath.
"We have been assigned the task of placing the tar for runway and apron and we have previous experience in similar projects. MTCC completed the runway development of Thimarafushi airport as well," Ziyath noted.
While the company has been awarded to develop both runway and apron of Kulhudhuffushi airport, MTCC had also handled the land reclamation project for the airport development.
The company's monolithic hopper-suction dredger 'Mahaa Jarraaf' on its maiden voyage to Maldives ported at Kulhudhuffushi and completed the land reclamation project under 180 days. The project cost MVR 53.4 million.
Maldives government has assured the development of as many as five regional airports in 2018 which includes Shaviyani atoll Funadhoo where the land reclamation project commenced earlier. In addition to this government has announced seeking interested parties to develop airports at Gaaf Dhaal Madaveli and Shaviyani Funadhoo.
