Maldives sets total eradication of Tuberculosis by 2022

Health Ministry on Thursday has officially kicked-off a detailed action plan to rid of Tuberculosis from Maldives by the year 2022.

The campaign was officially inaugurated in a special ceremony at the ministry by Maldives president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Tuberculosis is among the worst epidemics in the world, and requires stringent countermeasures and medication to remedy it. It is also one of the most expensive diseases to counter for.

Health records indicate that the average cases reported annually in Maldives retains between 150 to 200 which according to World Health Organization (WHO) is still lower in regional comparison.

Dr. Mathur highlighted the presence of several islands in the island nation without any cases of Tuberculosis reported, proving hopeful future end-results through the campaign.

The campaign also aims to reduce the Tuberculosis cases reported in Maldives to 50% by 2022 and cut-down the mortality cases related to Tuberculosis by 70%.

WHO representative to Maldives Dr. Arwind Mathur praised the health sector progress and developments made during the past two years, noting that the country has been successful in completely eradicating two other epidemics.

In his speech Dr. Mathur emphasized on the importance on eradicating Tuberculosis from Maldives and asserted on increasing efforts to counter the disease.

Dr. Mathur highlighted the presence of several islands in the island nation without any cases of Tuberculosis reported, proving hopeful future end-results through the campaign.

In addition to countering Tuberculosis, Maldives is actively attempting control the spread of AIDS in citizens.

Maldives have successfully controlled and eradicated measles and Filariasis.
