Trial of arrested Chief Justice tabled for Sun

The Maldives Supreme Court Chief Justice will be summoned to Criminal Court on Sunday afternoon for trial.

Following the top court's order on February 1 to release nine arbitrarily detained political leaders including former president Mohamed Nasheed, Maldives government locked horns with the top-court officials.

The final nail in the coffin for the apex court chief justice Abdulla Saeed and top court judge Ali Hameed came when incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom declared an initial 15-day state of emergency, temporarily suspending more than 20 constitutional and several judicature rights.

Immediately after the emergency proclamation, security forces moved into the premises of the top-court institution and arrested both chief justice and judge Ali Hameed. They were then transported to Dhoonidhoo penitentiary.

Both men are charged with accepting bribe and attempting to overthrow a constitutional government.

Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed will be summoned to court on Sunday for the trial hearing of one of charges prosecuted against him by the state.

The trial has been tabled for 15:00hrs on Sunday afternoon.

The scheduled trial on Sunday is the preliminary hearing for the charge of intervening government conduct.

Apart from the initially mentioned charges pressed against Abdulla Saeed, he is also tried for tampering or eliminating evidence.
