Local surfer dies from drowning

A local surfer who drowned at peak surf point Kaafu atoll Than'burudhoo on Saturday has died at ADK Hospital while being treated.

The Maldivian national identified as Abdulla Naail, 21, was rushed to ADK Hospital at the capital after he was discovered from the surf point moments after he went missing due to drowning.

Doctors confirm he passed away while getting medical attention at the hospital.

Naail who worked as a professional photographer in local media had taken up freelance photography in recent months.

According to Coast Guard unit of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) they discovered Naail at the east-side of Than'burudhoo around late afternoon of Saturday and was rushed to the capital in one of their 'fast interceptor craft.'

The authority had received report of a surfer going missing at the point around 16:57hrs while it has been confirmed that Naail had reached the break-point around 16:00hrs to surf.

Authorities have yet not been able to identify the exact reason behind the victim's drowning.

At the time of his demise, Naail was visiting Than'burudhoo as part of an ongoing project for Public Service Media [PSM] where he freelances.

Than'burudhoo was the alternative current government facilitated for the many surfers who enjoyed the south-east end of the capital - infamously known as 'Raalhugan'du' - which closed down due to the inception of China-Maldives Friendship Bridge.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) holds regular ferries between the island and Male' city transporting surfers and other water sports enthusiasts.
