Govt gives local editors 18 months to meet new criteria

Government on Sunday announced its decision to give local media editors 18 months to meet the new education criteria as the parent ministry devises a tailor-made degree program.

The recently announced change in regulation mandates editors of local media outlets to possess a bachelors degree in media or related field and five years media experience.

Following concerns and outrage by the media, home ministry in announcement on Sunday that it was in the process of designing a special 18 month degree program for editors who do not meet the newly required criteria.

Once the program has been designed, the ministry would open the opportunity for interested editors, the announcement read.

Maldives media council along with editors of leading local media outlets had met with home minister Azleen Ahmed to share concerns with the change in regulation.
