Sudden spike in electricity bills sparks outrage

Public concerns are beginning to mount over the sudden spike in electricity bills last month in the capital Male.

For both households and offices alike, the electricity bill was MVR1,000 higher than normal sparking public concern and outrage.

Some people who spoke to AVAS on condition of anonymity said they could not understand the sudden spike in last month's electricity bill when usage was generally the same.

"Earlier the bill was never higher than MVR700. But last month it was over MVR1,600. That has never happened before," one person bemoaned.

The complaints have largely centered around the fact that the spike in the electricity bill has been over 100 percent for most households and offices alike.

State utility company STELCO (State Electric Company Limited) was unavailable for comment over the sudden hike in electricity bills.
