Pickup drivers warn to protest over cargo-clearance issue

Several pickup drivers operating in the capital had initiated a strike by refusing to take any transporting jobs until an efficient working environment is provided for them.

A group of pickup drivers who mainly transport goods to places and specially gets most of their jobs at commercial harbors have sent a letter to Economic Minister confirming their strike; in light of the recent move by transport authority to limit cargo clearance and transport time from 18:00hrs till 06:00hrs.

The drivers had highlighted several issues and difficulties they stand to face with the new changes brought to traffic regulations.

One of the primary concerns of the drivers was the change in goods transport time; limiting their working hours to night-time exclusively. According to drivers due to these changes they face challenges in working during day time hours. They had also added that most of the drivers take relieves during night to spend time with their families.

They also highlighted the lack of adequate parking spots for pickups stating that due to prohibition of transporting goods during day time, they have been forced to park their vehicles without any work. The drivers had described the move as an attempt to extract fines from pickups since several of these vehicles would lose proper parking zones.

Pickup drivers had stressed on the increase of living expenses and working double-time already as a means to provide for their families, adding the government's move to limit their working hours would heavily reflect on their earnings.

They have challenged the ministry stating they refuse to come out for work unless they are provided with better opportunities.

Additionally the drivers had urged from the ministry to abolish the new regulations for goods transportation in the capital.
