Ex-Pres Nasheed urges electoral watchdog members swap

Self-exiled former president of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has urged to change the membership of the island nation's electoral watchdog prior to the presidential election later in 2018.

Through a Skype message, the former president while addressing the people of Alif Alif atoll Ukulhas has said that Elections Commission (EC) is compromised. He added the commission has lost credibility over recent months and was in need of a members 'overhaul.'

Nasheed, who is campaigning this time around as the 'Island President' had recommended parliament sitting including the deposed dozen lawmakers; whom opposition has refused to identify as unseated, to elect new members to the commission.

While noting the most important element of a presidential system was the conclusion of a presidential term and its succeeding election to 'identify' the new leader of the country.

The self-exiled former head of state had accused the Election Commission of influencing political parties to derive results favoring certain political party or parties. Nasheed had requested from the Maldives public as well as international observatory bodies to monitor the upcoming election.
