Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar has met with imprisoned former president of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom as representative to incumbent head of state Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Gayoom's advocate Maumoon Hameed had confirmed it through Twitter earlier on Monday.
The terrorism charged former president shared his worries regarding his trial proceedings and prison conditions with minister Shareef during Monday's encounter.
Previously Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu acting as representative to president Yameen Abdul Gayoom visited the now imprisoned political leader.
While defense minister met with Gayoom, the former president's health had deteriorated in recent weeks. Gayoom had already collapsed inside his captivated cell five times leading to his family and advocate growing concerned about his well-being.
The former president on multiple occasions, at the court, had requested to show leniency towards his incarceration and transfer him to house arrest until the conclusion of his trial. However Criminal Court had so far denied his requests.
The state is prosecuting the former president for act of terrorism due to his intimate involvement in the alleged coup plot devised through the apparent 'kick-starter' on February 1, 2018.
Maldives Supreme Court on aforementioned date, had issued a surprising release order of nine political prisoners which includes former president Mohamed Nasheed as well as the second vice-president under Yameen's administration; Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor.
