A group of masked men assaulted a young man in Laamu Atoll Gan island shortly after midnight on Monday.
Island council said the 21 year old was on the field playing football when the group of masked men attacked with sharp weapons.
"The victim has two very deep cuts on his back. There were other minor injuries as well," a council member told AVAS.
Gan Hospital said the victim's condition was not serious.
