Rundown govt flats spark blame game

Two rundown government flats in the capital Male have sparked a blame game between the government and the opposition dominated city council, accusing each other of neglect.

Housing minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu after visiting 'Male Hiyaa' and 'Sinamale' - two social housing flats had accused the city council of neglecting its responsibility to maintain the buildings.

In response, city counselor Shamaau Shareef hit-back saying that the housing ministry had ignored several written requests made over renovations of the two buildings.

Shareef also accused the ministry of crippling the council by taking away most of its mandate and slashing its budget.

Residents of the two buildings have complained for years over the lack of maintenance which has caused frequent leaks during rainy days resulting in damages to household items.
