Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has forwarded for parliament approval the name of High Court top-judge Abdulla Didi to replace the now convicted former Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed.
Earlier on Tuesday Judicial Services Commission (JSC) of Maldives had advised president Yameen to nominated the High Court chief judge for the role.
In a letter send by the Maldives head of state to local parliament he has requested from lawmakers to deliberate and conclude a decision regarding the names nominated by president Yameen for the designation of Chief Justice and the other vacant top-court judge post.
Apart from Abdulla Didi as the new Chief Justice, president Yameen had nominated High Court judge Abdul Ghanee Mohamed for the vacant judge post at Supreme Court.
The two apex court positions became vacant when Supreme Court supported the Criminal Court decision supported by High Court on Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and top-court judge Ali Hameed for influencing lower court judges.
The most recent amendment to Judges Act cites that court judges convicted for offenses concluded by Supreme Court would get redundant from their designations.
The JSC meeting on Tuesday to discuss the issue found all of its members coinciding to assign the aforementioned High Court judges to Supreme Court judges' bench.
