Family Court Chief Judge Huzaifa to be appointed to the High Court

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) will be appointing Chief Judge of the Family Court Huzaifa Mohamed to the High Court.

JSC Thursday said it had decided to appoint Judge Huzaifa to the post after the committee that appoints judges recommended her as a "highly recommended" candidate for the position. She will be sworn in as a High Court judge on the 27th of this month.

Huzaifa has worked as a judge for more than 14 years. She was appointed as the Chief Judge of the Family Court in March last year, becoming the first woman to be appointed as the Chief Justice of a Superior Court in the Maldives.

Huzaifa holds a Masters of Corporate Law from the International Islamic University of Malaysia.

A judge vacancy opened up in the High Court following the resignation of former Judge Ali Sameer on April 17. In addition to Huzaifa, Shukurullah Shakeel also applied for the post.

Since then, two other judge posts at the High Court have become vacant.
