Pres Yameen promises Hanimaadhoo Int'l Airport expansion

President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Thursday promised to expand and renovate Hanimaadhoo International Airport.

The Haa Dhaal atoll Hanimaadhoo airstrip was first transformed into an international airport during the administration of Dr. Mohamed Waheed.

Though regarded as an international airport, the flight destination is limited only to Thiruvananthapuram (or Trivandrum), India. Despite its transition into an international airport, it has been the subject of concern and criticism of many with regards to the venue's condition.

While addressing the people of Hanimaadhoo president Abdulla Yameen announced his future plan of establishing 3,000 tourist beds via hospitality outlets across the region of Haa Alif and Haa Dhaal atoll in the upcoming five year period.

The island nation's head of state noted that despite airport development projects at Haa Dhaal capital Kulhudhuffushi and Haa Alif atoll is underway, Hanimaadhoo International Airport will be the prime travel hub in the region.

While president Abdulla Yameen promised of impending tourism development in the region, Haa Dhaal atoll currently holds just a single resort island.
