EC to seek police aid to verify voter re-registration forms

Maldives' electoral watchdog has been engaged in discussions to seek police help in verifying voter re-registration forms for the upcoming presidential elections.

Elections Commission had held a sit-down with top police officials including acting police chief Abdulla Nawaz to discuss the role of the police in the September elections. Police aiding the commission in verifying the re-registration forms was also discussed, the commission said without divulging too much details of the meeting.

Elections Commission in a Tweet on Sunday admitted that it had received multiple complaints over fraudulent re-registration forms to vote in the upcoming presidential elections.

EC assured the public that all re-registration forms would be verified and urged the public to be wary of reported efforts to submit fake forms.

Voters would need to re-register if they wish to cast their ballots outside their native constituency.

Re-registration for presidential polls was opened on July 17 and will last until August 11.
