Maldives president's brother-in-law passes away

Brother-in-law of Maldives president Abdulla Yameen and locally renowned businessman Mohamed Manik (Ellaidhoo Manik) has passed away.

The island nation president's younger sister Mulima Abdul Gayoom's husband, Manik passed away sometime on Saturday evening after battling physical ailments for months.

At the time of demise, Manik aged 57 was diagnosed and getting treatment related to kidney and liver.

Known for his media 'shy' personality, Manik was regarded a frequent helper to the communities of Meemu, Alif Alif and Alif Dhaal atolls.

The local businessman also owns several resort properties including Ellaidhoo Resort, Maga Resort and Gasveli Resort, he is also the owner of Nasandhura Hotel.

At the time of his demise, Manik's spouse was visiting the neighboring India while his brother-in-law Yameen Abdul Gayoom was at Laamu atoll on a campaign trip.

Apart from his wife, Manik is survived by a son and a daughter from his previous marriage.
