Nasheed ends 'successful' Saudi visit

Maldives' self-exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed has ended his visit to Saudi Arabia on the invitation of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Former foreign minister Ahmed Naseem who had accompanied Nasheed hailed the trip as "very successful."

Naseem said Nasheed had now returned to the UK after the visit.

"Grateful thanks to His Majesty and to Crown Prince," Naseem said on Twitter.

Nasheed lives in self imposed exile most recently in Sri Lanka after he was allowed to leave to the UK on medical leave in an internationally brokered deal following his jailing on terrorism charges.

He was sentenced to 13 years in prison over the arbitrary arrest and subsequent detention of a sitting judge while he was president.

Nasheed has been critical of the incumbent government over its close ties with Saudi and China. He had also accused the Saudi government of dictating Maldives' foreign policy.

Nasheed meanwhile is set to return from exile on November 1 following the opposition alliance's resounding victory in last month's presidential elections.

His party had announced plans for celebrations throughout the Maldives to welcome Nasheed back to the country.
