Parliament elects Gayoom's MP son to judicial watchdog

Parliament on Tuesday voted to elect former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's lawmaker son Faris Maumoon as its new representative to the country's judicial watchdog.

The Dhiggaru MP as the sole nominee after ruling party lawmaker Ahmed Rasheed pulled out on the eleventh hour was backed by 67 lawmakers out of the 68 present during Tuesday's sitting with one abstaining.

Parliament the day before had voted out Guraidhoo lawmaker Ibrahim Riza from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) through a no confidence motion who had been serving in the commission as the parliament representative since August.

The opposition coalition has wrested parliament majority from the ruling party after its candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih defeated incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in the presidential elections in September.
