Judicial committee begins probe into 'gang link' allegation

A committee has been formed by the Judicial Service Commission to investigate claims made by the head of Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances.

Husnu-Al-Suood alleged on 30th December that gangs and businessmen exert undue influence on Criminal Court judges. The integrity of Criminal Court judges are compromised with the help of bribes and other incentives, claimed Suood.

JSC said in a statement on Tuesday that it is within their mandate to investigate Suood's claims and take due action where necessary, being the highest judicial authority of Maldives.

JSC also expressed their concern at the presidential commission's decision to make huge allegations against the judiciary that can be held in contempt of court.

The Supreme Court has also launched an investigation into Suood's claims, although the Criminal Court has denied all allegations.
