Minister of Gender, Family and Social Protection, Shidhatha Shareef stated on Tuesday that statistical data can help in bringing about positive changes to the society.
Speaking at the "Children in Maldives" Dissemination Session organized by UNICEF Maldives and National Bureau of Statistics, Minister Shidhatha highlighted the importance of gathering statistical data, adding that national plans can be formulated with the help of the data. The magnitude of the challenges and issues faced by Maldivian children can also be identified through statistics, said the Minister.
The Ministry recieves daily reports of child abuse, out of which the most common are sexual, physical and mental abuse, revealed Shidhatha. While some cases are not reported for various reasons, all reports made to the Gender Ministry will be thoroughly investigated, and action will be taken where necessary, assured the Minister.
