Maldives electoral watchdog has announced on Tuesday that they will begin accepting submissions to contest in the parliamentary elections starting next Monday.
The Elections Commission (EC) confirmed to AVAS that the official announcement will be made on 28th January, Monday, after which the commission would begin accepting the submissions.
Speaking to AVAS, commission member Ahmed Akram revealed that the new color and logo of the Elections Commission will also be revealed on the same day, although he did not disclose further details regarding the changes.
Akram added that discussions are currently ongoing with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Speaker of the Parliament Gasim Ibrahim regarding the budgetary requirements necessary to conduct the parliamentary election. There is no doubt that the election will be executed smoothly according to plan, assured Akram.
The parliamentary election is scheduled to take place on 7th April. Votes will be taken to elect representatives for 87 constituencies, which includes two newly established constituencies for capital Male'; Macchangolhi Central and Henveiru North.
While the date of the election has been finalized by the Elections Commission, the commission has instructed all political parties to conclude and submit the results of their parliamentary primaries by the 26th of January.
Main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have already concluded their primaries last Friday while coalition partner, Adhaalath Party have scheduled their primary for this Friday.
