Committee established to tackle blasphemy seeks help of additional authorities

The government has made the decision to seek the assistance and cooperation from National Centre for Counter Terrorism, and Police Intelligence in tackling cases of blasphemy.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih established a special committee to address anti-religious criticisms targeted towards Islam in the Maldives with the recent uprise in the expression of blasphemy on social media platforms.

After extensive discussions during the first meeting of the commmittee on Wednesday, it was decided that the assistance of National Centre for Counter Terrorism, and Police Intelligence will be sought in addition to the relevant authorities within the committee, to tackle such matters in order to safeguard the sanctity of the Islamic faith.

The government will not tolerate blasphemy and religious turmoil among the society as stated in the constitution of the Maldives and the manifesto of the joint coalition, decided the committee further.
