Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) is seeking prosecution for negligence in providing medical attention to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom while he was in prison.

HRCM forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General's Office on Tuesday.

The case was first filed with HRCM while Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom was being held in prison, and was frequently brought to the attention of HRCM several times after that.

HRCM confirmed on Tuesday that the investigation of the case has been concluded and forwarded to the Prosecutor Generals Office. However, they did not clarify whom they were seeking to prosecute. HRCM has also sought prosecution for the case of a recent death of an inmate.

President Maumoon Abdul Gayyom was jailed last February following the controversial February 1st court order issued by the Supreme Court. During the eight months he spent in jail, his health deteriorated significantly, due to which he was frequently brought to capital Male' for treatment. Several court hearings also had to be cancelled due to his medical condition. His lawyers continuously implored to have him transferred under house arrest, however, the courts had no issued such an order at the time.

President Maumoon also suffered a fall during his imprisonment due to which his condition had worsened.
