Parliament summons heads of authorities over prison unrest

Heads of relevant authorities are being summoned to the Parliament's Human Rights and Gender Committee over the unrest that took place at Maafushi Prison on Thursday.

During Saturday's committee meeting, all members unanimously agreed to summon officials from the authorities to inquire regarding the progress of the investigation into the incident and details on the prison conditions. The heads of authorities are scheduled to attend Monday's committee meeting.

Maafannu Uthuru MP Imthiyaz Fahmy proposed to summon heads of Ministry of Home Affairs, Maldives Correctional Services and Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, and was seconded by Nilandhoo MP Abdul Muhsin.

The committee also made the decision to require authorities to prepare and submit a report on jail conditions.

An unrest that occurred at Maafushi Prison last Thursday saw several inmates and Correction's officers injured. Home Ministry has confirmed that prison officers had engaged in excessive use of force to gain control of the situation. The Ministry has assured that the incident will be investigated, and necessary action will be taken against those responsible.
