Prison officer attacked in Maafushi island

A prison officer working at Maafushi Prison was assaulted on Saturday night.

A media official from Maldives Correctional Services confirmed to AVAS that a prison officer was attacked late Saturday night in Maafushi island. However, no further details were revealed.

Photographs of prison officers have been circulating on social media following an unrest that occurred at the Maafushi Prison last Thursday. While reports that denied normalcy had been restored to the jail have also been making the rounds, Corrections have confirmed that there have been no disturbances at the prison after Thursday's incident was controlled.

The Emergency Support Group (ESG) Commander of Maafushi Prison has been placed under suspension following the incident. Home Ministry has admitted that six inmates and one prison officer were injured in the incident, during which prison guards had engaged in use of excessive force to control the situation.

Maafushi is an island in Kaafu atoll where a large number of tourists visit throughout the year. Several incidents have occurred in the prison in the past, however, almost no incidents related to the prison have taken place elsewhere on the island.
