Opposition PG leader summoned to police HQ

Parliamentary group leader of the opposition, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik has been summoned to the police headquarters.

Nihan is being summoned over obstructing a police vehicle during Wednesday night's rally organized by PPM calling for the release of their arrested leader, former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

A video circulating on social media showed Nihan inserting a brick underneath the wheel of a police vehicle.

In their summon, the police cited obstructing the police from carrying out their duties as the reason for the summon. Nihan is being summoned for questioning.

Nihan has been ordered to present himself at the Police Headquarters at 8.30 pm on Friday night.

While the former president's loyalist is being summoned for questioning, his leader still remains in remand jail over money-laundering charges.

Criminal Court on Monday began the trial of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom who is facing charges of money laundering linked to the biggest corruption scandal in the history of the island nation, the MMPRC graft.

The prosecution asked the court to take Yameen into custody to deny him the chance to influence the evidence against him, which was granted by the court. However, the Criminal Court's order to detain him has since been appealed at the High Court by President Yameen.
