MP Nihan joins PNC

Parliamentary group member of opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has joined Peoples' National Congress (PNC).

The sister party of PPM, PNC was formed under the instructions from former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom when the ownership of PPM was in question last year over a dispute between Yameen and his half brother former president Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom.

Nihan, who recently resigned as the parliamentary group leader of PPM joined PNC on the request of the former president, it has been reported.

Nihan had earlier claimed that the leadership of PPM had failed after the party's humiliating defeat in both the presidential and parliamentary election. The current Villingili MP, who was not re-elected in this month's parliamentary election further said the leadership of PPM should step aside to allow for fresh faces to take up leadership positions.

The congress of PNC has been scheduled for next Saturday to elect permanent members to PNC's leadership.
