Foreign Minister heads to Geneva for UNHRC

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has departed to Geneva, Switzerland to take part in United Nation's Human Rights Council (UNHCR).

The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system made up of 47 States responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. The Council was created by the United Nations General Assembly thirteen years ago in 2016.

In a tweet published by Minister Shahid, he informed that he will be addressing the esteemed council at 6.00pm local time.

Two presidents, two prime ministers and ministers from several member countries will take part in the 40th session of the Human Rights Council.

During the sessions, different UN councils tasked with assessing the situations in Sudan, Syria, Burundi and Palestine will be presenting their findings.

In addition to discussions on implementing capital punishment, six other important issues have been scheduled for debate.
