Petition against ACC members gains attention

A petition calling for the dismissal of the members of the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) has started gaining attention.

Headed by former attorney from Attorney General's Office Aishath Sunana, she revealed that the purpose of preparing the petition is to pressurize the commission members who have recently come under fire for graft allegations and their lack of professional integrity.

Gathering signatures for the petition went on at the reclaimed Artifiial Beach area in ncapital Male' on Friday afternoon.

The petition has already been signed a large number of people,i ncluding former president of the Maldives and leader of main ruling- MDP Mohamed Nasheed, and several candidates representing MDP in the upcoming parliamentary election.

Sunana sad the petition will be presented to the parliament. The document calls for the members of the parliament to seek a no confidence motion against the graft watchdog, and relieving them of their duties.

The much awaited ACC report into the Maldives Media and PR Corporation (MMPRC) scandal earlier this month revealed that over USD79 million had been embezzled through the state tourism promotion company. However, it has also been alleged that a portion of the funds were received by some members of ACC and their families. The graft watchdog has also been accused of publishing an incomplete report of the MMPRC scandal.
