Japanese tourist dies in diving accident

A Japanese tourist who went diving in a local safari has passed away.

The 64 year old man's health deteriorated after diving near Vaavu atoll, and was taken to the atoll hospital for treatment. However, he had already passed away by the time he was taken to the hospital.

The incident occurred around 9.40pm on Sunday night. The body has now been brought to capital Male'.

There has been an alarming increase in the number of tragic incidents occurring at sea. The growing number of drowning incidents recently prompted the police to issue a warning about beach and water safety. The authorities have warned of the risk of drowning, mainly for international visitors.

The Tourism Ministry is trying to identify the reasons behind such drownings in a bid to prevent tragic incidents.
