Utility company refutes wrongful dismissal claims

Utility company FENAKA Corporation has revealed that 53 employees who were working at the state-owned corporation were dismissed rightfully.

Heads of FENAKA Corporation was summoned to the Committee on Oversight of the Government at the Parliament after a complaint was filed by opposing PPM claiming that an exorbitant number of employees who did not support the current government were dismissed from the corporation. During the committee meeting held on Tuesday with top officials from FENAKA, Managing Director of the company Ahmed Saeed Mohamed said the company was in a very dire state when the new government took over administration in November 2018. All necessary action to reverse the current situation of the company are being undertaken, said Saeed.

In order to amend the financial situation of the company, the company has made the decision to close 14 regional offices of the company, and the implementation of the plan has caused some employees to lose their jobs, noted Saeed. The corporation is also investigating acts of corruption within the company, and those implicated in such acts are being dismissed, explained Saeed. In addition to this, some employees have also been dismissed due to their negligence in fulfilling the responsibilities of their jobs. A total of 53 employees have been dismissed thus far, informed Saeed.

"We shut down 14 regional offices. All except 14 employees from these offices are still employed at the corporation. The 14 dismissed employees were given their due rights and compensations at the time of dismissal", said Saeed.

Shutting down the regional offices is an important move in re-building and reversing the financial capacity of the company, and would retain MVR 14 million yearly. Although the company was not in a healthy state at the time, 170 new staff were employed at the corporation just ahead of the 2018 presidential election by the former heads of the company, said Saeed.

Deputy Managing Director of FENAKA, Ibrahim Waheed said the company does not wish to dismiss any employees, and all employed at the regional offices were given the opportunity to be transferred to offices in other islands. Those who did not take up the opportunity were dismissed, said Waheed.
