Male' tap water confirmed as safe to drink

Health Ministry has confirmed that the water supplied to households by utility company MWSC is safe for drinking.

After Health Ministry, Maldives Food and Drug Authority and MWSC conducted a series of tests to ensure that tap water is safe for drinking, Health Ministry has announced that the tap water supplied to households are within the standards classified by World Health Organization (WHO) to be safe.

Speaking to the media, senior Scientific Officer of Maldives Food and Drug Authority Sajidha Mohamed said the water was tested several times over a period of three weeks before concluding it as safe to drink. Further tests will be conducted to study the changes to the water quality, said Sajidha.

Speaking at the press conference, Environment Minister Hussain Rasheed Hassan said the water supplied to households in capital Male' are tested at three different stages, and the quality of the water exceeds WHO standards. He assured the safety of the water supplied by MWSC, but said he cannot comment on any affects the plumbing of the households may have on the water.
