Parliament to decide on joining international environmental treaty

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has made the decision to send to the parliament the matter of Maldives joining the international environmental treaty, 'The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals'.

The Presidents' Office said the decision comes after discussion at the cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, based on a paper presented by the Environment Ministry.

The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) aims to conserve terrestrial, marine and avian migratory species. It is an international treaty, concluded under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme, concerned with the conservation of wildlife and habitats on a global scale. 127 countries are currently part of the CMS treaty and is it is believed that the Maldives would benefit greatly from joining CMS.
