Pres. assures decentralized governance for local councils

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that the island councils will be given the responsibility of administrating their respective islands.

Speaking at the ceremony held on Monday to launch the website specialized for local tourism "islands.mv", President Solih said the government's desired policy is a decentralized system which would enable islands to become more economically stable.

The president shared plans to transfer local businesses under the mandate of island councils, and increase financial growth of the islands via local tourism.

Noting the benefits of the newly launched website, the president said the website would help expand local tourism, with the responsibility of maintaining the websites falling on the councils.

Islands.mv is a website that lists information on guesthouses, water sports centers, natural resources and historical sites in local islands. The website was developed by National Center for Information Technology (NCIT) for the promotion of local tourism in the Maldives.
