Foremost duty of the parliament is to restore balance, says Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the highest priority of the newly elected 19th parliament should be bringing peace and balance to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government.

Winning an astounding amount of seats in Saturday's parliamentary election, main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured super majority of the parliament.

"We will execute the work that has been tasked upon us perfectly. Our foremost duty is to bring peace to the government", said President Nasheed who won the Macchangolhi Central seat in the election.

Addressing the crowd while celebrating MDP's historical win last night, Nasheed said the newly elected parliament is one that possesses integrity.

"The days of Rolex watches and Kohinoor is over. The parliament you have elected today possesses integrity. You desired to reform the general well-being of the nation and housing. Hopefully, we will succeed in fulfilling your wishes", said Nasheed.

MDP ran an extremely successful campaign based around their visions for the 19th Parliament. Named Agenda19, their framework for the 19th parliament was their key tool in running their campaign. The temporary results show that MDP has won over 60 seats in the parliament.

This is the first time in Maldivian history that a single party has secured such a large number of seats in the parliament.
