Parliament to decide on foreign ownership bill

A sitting of the parliament has been scheduled to repeal the amendment brought to the constitution which allows foreigners to own land in the Maldives.

While the first sitting of the parliament after Saturday's parliamentary election has been scheduled for Monday, April 15, the report by the Committee on National Security on the bill will be presented to the parliament floor. The bill to repeal the amendment brought to Article 251, subsection A of the constitution was proposed by Maafannu Dhekunu MP from PM, Abdulla Rifau during November last year.

Article 251 previously stated that no foreign party may own or be given ownership of any part of the Maldivian territory. Therefore, if the bill to repeal the amendment is approved during Monday's sitting, the article will be reverted back to the previous law.
