Former Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz has stated that all information he had on the murder of MP Dr Afrashim Ali has been shared with The Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances.
Speaking on a program on local news channel PSM, the former commissioner said all information obtained on the brutal murder are with the police, as the information he had on the case are what he learnt from the police investigation during his time as the Police Commissioner.
"I have always been reiterating that all information I have on the case are at the police headquarters. The information was obtained during investigation while I was the Commissioner of Police. Therefore, all information I have on the case have already been shared with the commission by the police", he said.
Riyaz further said he believes he will be contacted if any further information is required.
"The investigation is still ongoing. I have always been stating that I cannot speak regarding the case to the media or on social media. The case is still ongoing. The trial is still ongoing. Therefore I cannot publicize information I obtained as the Commissioner", he added.
The current Kinbidhoo MP was the Commissioner of Police in 2012 when Dr Afrashim's murder took place, and the investigation of the case was conducted under his supervision for an year until he resigned from the post in 2013. The former commissioner had earlier claimed that he would reveal information on the case when the 'time was right', however, he has not made any revelations thus far.
The Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances was convened by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his first day in office by a Presidential Decree. The Commission is currently investigating several cases including the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan and the murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed.
