ACC investigations identify MVR 3.5 bill in state assets as missing

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has revealed that the investigations carried out thus far this year conclude that MVR 3.5 billion is missing in state funds.

At a ceremony held to mark the anniversary of ACC, Vice President of the commission Muawwiz Rasheed emphasized on the importance of recovering state assets under a pragmatic system.

"While no such system currently exists, I have to note that there is an exorbitant amount of assets that are not in the possession of the state. The cases investigated thus far this year alone identified that assets over MVR 3.5 billion are missing from state funds", said Muawwiz.

Muawwiz noted that the inquiries carried out by independent commissions are sometimes met with resistance, where inadequate amount of cooperation is received. He also noted that post-research recommendations issued by the commissions are not implemented effectively.

"We have to organize the work of administrative departments of the state in such a way that it does not lead to corruption. In order to achieve this, we have to ensure that the work undertaken by these entities are transparent", he added.

Noting the importance of regaining the trust of the people in putting a stop to acts of corruption, Muawwiz further said the laws and regulations should be implemented equally on everyone, despite their status, or the party or entity they belong to.

While the number of corruption cases involving state-owned companies are extra-ordinarily high, Muawwiz welcomed President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's zero tolerance policy against corruption, and acknowledged that the policy is a support to the commission's work
