Outgoing parliament concludes final sitting

The 18th Parliament has concluded its term after the conduction of their final parliament sitting on Monday.

Speaker of the parliament Gasim Ibrahim said 94% of work tasked to the parliament had been completed by the end of term. Concluding the final sitting, the Speaker gave an overview of the work done by the 18th parliament.

Gasim said the 18th Parliament worked on 174 bills and 7 decrees since May 28, 2014. 154 issues raised by the government, 26 issues raised by the Secretariat and 19 issues raised by lawmakers on the parliament were also attended.

Five national budgets and one supplementary budget was passed by the 18th parliament, and 151 reports on different issues were prepared and issued. 60 cabinet members were questioned by the parliament during the term.

“If we are to look at percentages, the 18th parliament attended to 94% of work tasked to them. This is a very high number”, said Gasim.

The 19th parliament will swear in on May 28. With the addition of two new constituencies, Macchangolhi Central and Hulhumale’ constituency, the 19th parliament will have 87-members.

Main-ruling Maldivian Democratic party (MDP) secured super majority in the recent parliamentary election, winning 65 seats in a landslide victory. Jumhooree Party and opposing PPM both won five seats each.
